reimagining restoration

Ecological restoration: the term often evokes images of engineers and scientists, with analytics and heavy machinery, spraying or drilling into degraded, bare soils. And in many instances, it is these things. But just as often, it is a pollinator garden in an urban road median; a backyard turned from non-native turf to a mosaic of habitat; attention given to the space beyond our edible garden fences. If we reimagine ecology as something including humans and their habitats, then our homes, gardens, and edges become a critical component of regional restoration efforts.

At Borderlands Restoration, we believe that small landowners, backyard gardeners, and nature enthusiasts all have a part to play in the restoration movement that is as significant as landscape-scale engineered approaches. And so this Winter, we invite you to bring some of the wild Borderlands into your backyard with our carefully curated native seed offerings.

wild seed offerings

Winter is in fact the best time to apply your seed! Lowered insect activity means less seed gets eaten, and most of our native plants require a period called vernalization, where they become atuned to the natural cycles of the seasons by experiencing a cold period. Basically, letting your seed experience a couple months of winter on the ground will make sure they know exactly when to wake up in the spring!

All of our retail seed is wild-harvested from private lands or farmed from wild-harvested seed at our nursery & seed farm. This maintains the adaptations to regional conditions in the seed’s genetics, which is important for establishment and survival. In our first year of offering retail seed, we are eager to get it into the hands of gardeners and get some feedback. As a result we've marked down all our seed mixes for the month of December by 20%!

Here are some of our favorite seed mixes for our homes & for gifts:

Pollinator Refuge Seed Mix – An incredibly rich mix of annual, biennial, and perennial wildflowers native to our Sky Islands. Blanketflower, Evening Primrose, Peruvian Zinnia, Arizona Milkweed, and Black-eyed Susan are just a few of the stars in this mix. Sold in coin envelopes: a little bit goes a long way!

Madrean Grassland Seed Mix – We celebrate the diversity of our wildlands with this mix, that contains over 40 native species of grasses, forbs, agaves, sotols, and more! There is something for every space here, making it hard to go wrong with this mix for building habitat in any space or soil type.

Native Grass & Wildflower Seed Balls – Seed balls are a low-tech, portable strategy we use to increasing the success of seeding projects: plus, they're fun to throw around! Build native habitat anywhere and strengthen your soil seed bank with a simple toss of a handful of seeds bound up with clay and soil. Great for kids, nomads, novice gardeners…just about everyone.

As a social enterprise, we invest every dollar that we make back into our mission, so you have the added bonus of knowing you are supporting habitat restoration on wild lands with your purchase!

Join us and show your gratitude for all things wild this season with a handful of seed
 and some good intentions.
