Borderlands Restoration Network has partnered with the University of Arizona’s Southwest Center and Desert Laboratory of Tummamoc Hill along with the College of Natural Resources and the Environment for a collaborative free workshop training series, Mesquite Artisan Training for Climate-Resilient Management of Mesquite Savannas and Woodlands in Southern Arizona: Creating Jobs for a Restoration Economy, funded by the University of Arizona Institutes for Resilience (AIR) grant.

This free climate-friendly mesquite artisan training series will teach mesquite management and artisan skills that can enhance mesquite habitats in southern Arizona to reduce the impacts of wildfires, floods, drought, and heat waves in rangeland interfaces with rural communities.

The workshops will provide participants with hands-on training and skill building teaching sustainable uses for mesquite ranging from practical knowledge to managing mesquite on your property, learning about fine woodworking, and using mesquite as a local food source. Workshops are free and open to all participants 18+.

Borderlands Nursery & Seed

Join us Saturday, October 15 for a tour of the BRN Seed Lab to learn about our seed lab operations and programs, then head out to the beautiful San Rafael Valley to learn about native grasses and our ethical seed collection protocols.
Participants will then help collect seeds that will be used in a local ecological restoration project to mitigate erosion and revegetate the landscape to support habitat in the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains on public and private lands.

Participants should bring water and snacks, wear sun-protective gear, long pants, and sturdy shoes for walking across uneven terrain and be comfortable hiking short distances.
