NATIVE GRASS HAY

Native Hay As A Restoration Plant Material

Borderlands Restoration and other local conservation organizations have used native grass hay as a mulch and we are interested in getting more information about user experiences with this product. We are partnering with The Nature Conservancy's Cobra Ranch, located in Aravaipa Canyon, Arizona, to provide a limited quantity of native hay through the BRN Native Plant Materials Program. This is a one time opportunity so take advantage and help us learn more about using this unique plant material!

READ MORE about The Nature Conservancy's Cobra Ranch Native Hay Production Case Study

This hay has thousands of seeds of native grasses including seeds of cane beardgrass, sideoats grama, bristlegrass, and green sprangletop, among others. One bale can cover around 80 sq ft. as a mulch. The benefit to using native hay as a mulch is that you have a seed source built in, as the grasses were cut after they had set seed.

See complete list of species here.

Native Hay as a Livestock Feed
This hay is used as a feed for livestock at the Cobra Ranch with great success. Nutritional  analysis from a cutting off of the Cobra Ranch from 2014 can be viewed here. BRN is currently processing a sample from the cutting currently available and will have nutritional information available soon.

There are many nutritional benefits to feeding your livestock native grasses, and many benefits to wildlife and land in the production field or pasture.
Check out this recent post from the USDA about science that shows native grass benefits for cattle grazing!
We have much to learn about this product and hope that you will try it out and share your experiences with us via a survey after use. Our long-term goal is to learn more about the viability of native hay as a restoration and agricultural product, to promote grassland restoration and holistic management across the borderlands. We're grateful to The Nature Conservancy for the opportunity to partner and learn about this product!
