SALUD COMCÁAC

ABOUT SALUD COMCÁAC

Initiated in 2020, Salud Comcáac formed to provide an effective response to the emergence of Covid-19 in two remote Seri communities bridging ancient indigenous healing practices together with modern healthcare to prevent and treat Covid and other health problems. A team of herbalist traditional healers and health promoters, medical technicians, nurses and doctors provide integrative healthcare for 1,500 Comcáac residents in the villages of Desemboque and Punta Chueca, promoting health and wellbeing, preventing hospitalizations and avoiding deaths from Covid-19.

The scope of this initiative has broadened in order to strengthen community and ecological resilience while addressing  underlying vulnerabilities exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic and effects of climate change.

In addition to providing community health services, environmental health teams lead initiatives to solve energy, food and water insecurity, and to increase sustainable livelihoods. Ecological restoration teams advance climate change preparedness by enhancing carbon sequestration and protect coastal habitats and sea turtles.

These multidisciplinary groups and collaborators  include women solar energy technicians, traditional knowledge keepers, engineers, specialists in food and fisheries, ecologists and experts in sea turtle conservation, carbon sequestration and regenerative local economic development.
