Wrapping up Spring and Welcoming Summer: Highlights from the BRN Education Team

The education team had the pleasure of hosting Professor Luring’s Desert Ecology summer class all the way from Wichita State University based in Kansas!



The students joined us for a gorgeous 2-mile exploration stroll through Smith Canyon at the Borderlands Wildlife Preserve. Along the way, we talked about all things desert ecology, alongside exciting career paths in ecological restoration and environmental education. 


Through-out the hike, we encountered signs of wildlife such as scat and tracks and a handful of native lizards, including a stunning Regal Horned Lizard, along with Silky-Flycatchers, blooming Arizona Prickly Poppies and Giant Mesquite Bugs. The students made sure to capture plenty of shots for the photographic component of their class! Thank you Wichita State!





Last month, the education team embarked on a program development journey to Douglas and Portal, Arizona, in preparation for this year’s upcoming Fall Borderlands Earth Care Youth (BECY) program. Applications for the Cochise County iteration of BECY will be released this upcoming August!






While the school year might be over, the educators aren't slowing down. We are gearing up for some fun and we want you there with us!


Kicking this off, educators, Karla and Xochitl, will host their very first Nogales event on July 11th! Come Outdoors Together for a sunset stroll and mural appreciation in the downtown Nogales Art District.


Join the BRN education team for a 1.5 mile sunset stroll through the vibrant heart of downtown Nogales. We will be exploring the Morley Avenue Art District together, taking our time to appreciate the incredible local murals and artwork that make our borderlands community so special. Make sure to stick around for a cool treat and block printing after.






Additionally, the team is thrilled to welcome Dr. Michelle Marie for a virtual workshop: Finding Yourself Through an Authentic Career! Get ready for a supportive dive into navigating your professional journey with confidence. Zoom link shared upon registration!
